Be In Your Body – Self-Care September Week Three

Be In Your Body with Doctor Solomon’s

What does it mean to be in your body, to be truly grounded and present?  What is mindfulness?  How can we be in the moment, when we’re constantly bombarded with screens, ads, moving from task to task.  From the moment the alarm goes off, you’re thinking about your day ahead at work.  Then at work your brain is preoccupied with what you’re going to have for dinner, and how you’ll fit in a quick work-out.  Sound familiar?  For week three of our Self-Care September series, let’s take a moment, and learn what it means to be in your body.

What Is Mindfulness

Mindfulness is considered a type of meditation.  At its core, mindfulness is being present in each moment and fully experiencing it.  That could look like sitting on a porch watching the rain, and feeling the mug of tea in your hand.  Your mind is focused on experiencing that moment.  What the rain sounds like as it’s hitting your roof, the smell of damp earth.  The feel of the warm cup on your fingers, the wet air hitting your skin.  It can also look like folding laundry, and experiencing the texture of the clothes.  Allowing yourself to be bored and not attempting to preoccupy your thoughts with something else. This doesn’t mean your mind has to be empty, just acknowledging your thoughts as they arrive, then letting them pass you by.  The key to mindfulness is the lack of judgement.

This doesn’t come naturally in the world we live in.  A little over twenty percent of adults in America deal with chronic pain.  About twenty three percent American adults struggle with mental health conditions.  Mental and physical health complications can make mindfulness extremely difficult.  That’s the population who need these tools the most.  A study done in 2015  showed that patients who made mindfulness a daily habit had brain images that showed less activation in the areas of their brain that dealt with pain management. Although this can be a difficult habit to form at first, it can be life changing.

Tips to start making mindfulness a habit include;

-Mindful Eating:  Fully immerse yourself in each bite you take, allowing the texture, taste and smell to be experienced.

-Breathing/Meditation Exercises:  There are many videos online that help assist in guided meditation, or breathing exercises that will help you learn what works best for you.

-Acknowledging Thoughts and Emotions:  So often, we can find ourselves in mental spirals before we even know how it happened.  By naming what you’re feeling in the moment, and identifying your thoughts, you become aware.  That’s the first step, then from there, you can let those thoughts and feelings pass.

Incorporating Cannabis Into Mindfulness

Cannabis is a tool, like any other.  The plant can be extremely helpful in anyone’s mindfulness journey, no matter where they’re at.  Intentional consumption is also a piece of the puzzle.  If after a hard day, a person wants to rest and relax, do you think they’re going to choose a strain that makes them calm down,.  Or one that gives them energy?  Of course, they’d choose something to help wind them down.  That’s what consumption with intention boils down to, checking in with your body, and seeing what it needs.  Before landing on what method (or product) you consume.  If you need some inspiration, we got you!  Using mindfulness in tandem with cannabis can look like;

-Wanting to set the vibe before a house warming party with your friends.  So, you roll a joint (L’Orange would be a perfect fit) before they arrive, to encourage a social, upbeat gathering.  This allows everyone to experience the present moment.

-Accidentally pulling a muscle while cleaning, and instead of pushing through, pulling out Dr.Solomon’s Rescue lotion to provide immediate pain relief, and taking a break.

-Wanting to make the most of a hike, and pairing nature’s view with a 1:1 THC and CBG gummy (like Beboe’s Sparkling Pear 5mg Gummies).  This helps keep you going, subside joint aches and pains, and enjoy the hike!

-Experiencing a pain flare up, so you grab a tincture before listening to a guided meditation.
